Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams

Release date: 1987
"Shattered Dreams" entered the UK Singles Chart in March 1987 at number 92, but gained popularity through extensive radio play and video rotation on MTV and quickly climbed the charts, peaking at number five in May 1987. The single topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart for one week and peaked at number two for three non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
There was no Johnny in Johnny Hates Jazz, this English pop group was named for a jazz-hating mutual friend of the three original members, Calvin Hayes, Mike Nocito and frontman Clark Datchler (who wrote this song). Ironically enough, the group got its big break while performing at a jazz club, where they were discovered and eventually signed by Virgin Records.
Album: Turn Back the Clock

LYRICS

So much for your promises
They died the day you let me go
Caught up in a web of lies
But it was just too late to know
I thought it was you
Who would stand by my side

And now you've given me, given me
Nothing but shattered dreams, shattered dreams
Feel like I could run away, run away
From this empty heart

You said you'd die for me,

Woke up to reality
And found the future not so bright
I dreamt the impossible
That maybe things could work out right
I thought it was you
Who would do me no wrong

But now you've given me, given me
Nothing but shattered dreams, shattered dreams
Feel like I could run away, run away
From this empty heart

You've given me, given me
Nothing but shattered dreams, shattered dreams
Feel like I could run away, run away
From this empty heart

From this empty heart
I thought it was you who said they'd die for love

And now you've given me, given me
Nothing but shattered dreams, shattered dreams
Feel like I could run away, run away
From this empty heart

You've given me, given me
Nothing but shattered dreams, shattered dreams
Feel like I could run away, run away
From this empty heart

Oh no no no you said you'd die for me
Oh oh die for me
So much for your promises
