Release date: 1968
This was written by Bob Thiele and George Weiss. The song is about appreciating the beauty of our surroundings. Armstrong recorded this for scale, accepting only $250 to make sure the orchestra got paid. The boss of ABC Records hated this and did not promote it until it became a hit in England. In Britain, this was the biggest-selling single of 1968.
In America, this song became a beloved standard but when it was first released in 1968 it barely dented the charts peaking at #116. It was more appreciated 20 years later when it was used in the Robin Williams movie "Good Morning, Vietnam", the song was re-released to coincide with the film and this time charted at #32.
Album: What a Wonderful World
LYRICS
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world
